Is there anything more beautiful than a Thanksgiving meal? No matter how many people will be gathered around your table, taking the time to cook a homemade meal is a ritual of love for yourself and for anyone else joining you for the holiday feast.
If you have booked Black Friday off of work and will be home for a wonderful long weekend, you may be thinking about adding cannabis recipes to your Thanksgiving menu this year. The internet is literally full of delicious appetizers, desserts, and side dishes that are easy and affordable to make at home.
For this list, we stuck to the classics to show how easy it is to make your homemade Thanksgiving meal with a few extra dishes that can really bring on feelings of holiday cheer. Or, in some cases, ensure that you curl up on your couch with your dog, feeling relaxed and watching some great Hallmark movies.
Great Thanksgiving Recipe Ideas to Try This Thanksgiving
If you enjoy cooking, you are probably well-versed in traditional Thanksgiving recipes. The ingredients are so savory, from melted butter to maple syrup, brown sugar, sweet potatoes, and the star of the Thanksgiving dinner, a big turkey. Or tofurkey, if you are vegetarian or vegan.
Cannabis-infused dishes may not be the best choice if you are going to have a house full of guests. But if you are cooking for yourself or a small group for Friendsgiving, adding THC to traditional Thanksgiving recipes can add a new dimension to your holiday season.
1. Cannabis-Infused Gravy
Bring on the turkey and stuffing with hot piping gravy! Nothing is better than drowning your entire plate with a rich turkey gravy, and making a THC-infused sauce is easier than you think. Particularly if you already have some cannabis butter in the fridge.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup cannabis-infused butter (cannabutter)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups turkey or chicken broth (low sodium is a healthier choice)
- Salt and raw pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Melt the cannabis-infused butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour until it forms a smooth paste.
- Gradually add the broth, whisking constantly.
- Simmer until the gravy thickens, then season with salt and pepper.
If you have guests joining you or staying over at your home, remember to label the cannabutter when you put it back in the fridge. It’s very easy for someone to make a mistake and accidentally ingest a cannabis-infused food, which can cause adverse effects.
2. Herb-Infused Cannabis Mashed Potatoes
Any Thanksgiving menu that doesn’t include mashed potatoes would be strange. Not to mention that mashed potatoes are easy and economical to make for a delicious comfort food side dish that sticks to your ribs and goes perfectly with a roasted turkey.
But if you plan on making THC-infused gravy, you may want to rethink adding decarboxylated flower to your mashed potatoes. Everything in moderation!
Ingredients:
- 5 pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 cup cannabis-infused cream (mix cannabis-infused butter with warm cream)
- 1/2 cup regular butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh herbs (parsley, chives)
Instructions:
- Boil potatoes until tender, then mash.
- Mix in regular butter and cannabis-infused cream until smooth.
- Season with salt and pepper, then fold in fresh herbs.
Know what you can do with leftover mashed potatoes? Do not throw them out! You can make potato patties and fry them the next morning for breakfast or mix in some honey mustard to make a delicious soft potato salad that goes great with a turkey sandwich.
3. Cannabis-Infused Cranberry Sauce:
Cranberry sauce has to be one of the most favorite side dishes served on a Thanksgiving menu. Some people prepare it the traditional way, from raw cranberries blanched and seasoned to perfection. Other people enjoy the jellied cranberry sauce out of a can.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh cranberries
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cannabis-infused honey
- 1 cup water
- Zest and juice of one orange
Instructions:
- Combine cranberries, sugar, cannabis-infused honey, and water in a saucepan.
- Simmer over medium heat until cranberries burst.
- Stir in orange zest and juice, then cool before serving.
Sadly, infusing the jelled sauce would be virtually impossible. But you can make raw, fresh cranberry sauce with the natural sweetness of THC-infused honey, which is just as good (if not better) than the canned variety.
4. Cannabis-Infused Pumpkin Pie
You either love pumpkin pie and all things pumpkin spice in the month of November, or you really cannot stand it. For those who look forward to a great pumpkin pie after a Thanksgiving meal, creating the THC-infused filling is as easy as combining decarbed cannabis with condensed milk.
Avoid putting the cannabis directly into the condensed milk, however. Tie a portion of it in a cheesecloth, and then let it simmer. That way, you won’t have the extra fiber of stems and leaves in your pie filling.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree
- 3/4 cup cannabis-infused sweetened condensed milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 unbaked pie crust
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Whisk together pumpkin, cannabis-infused sweetened, condensed milk, eggs, spices, and salt in a bowl.
- Pour into the pie crust and bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes or until set.
If you want to add some additional THC to your Thanksgiving dessert pie, you can also use cannabis-infused butter and brush the pan and then the crust when you prebake it. Just be aware of the potency of cannabis you are using and how many infused side dishes or desserts you are making.
Most of us have a penchant for overeating at a Thanksgiving feast, and you may not feel the effects of edibles right away. But after about ninety minutes, you may find yourself uncomfortably high if you consume too much. Symptoms of nausea are really unpleasant when your stomach is full.
5. Cannabis-Infused Stuffing:
Thinking about buying the boxed stuffing? Don’t let Martha Stewart know! Making your own stuffing is best, and it is far easier than people think to pull off a delicious, savory, and sticky stuffing like your grandmother used to make.
Don’t just stir your homemade stuffing. Put some gloves on and knead the ingredients together. That helps the bread retain moisture, and it is the secret to making the sticky stuffing that everyone loves.
Ingredients:
- 1 loaf of bread cubed (sourdough is best)
- 1/2 cup cannabis-infused butter
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh Italian curly parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon sage
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2-3 cups chicken broth
Instructions:
- Sauté onions, celery, and garlic in cannabis-infused butter until softened.
- In a large bowl, combine toasted bread, sautéed vegetables, herbs, salt, and pepper.
- Slowly add broth until the stuffing reaches the desired consistency.
- Bake in a casserole dish at 350°F (175°C) for 30-40 minutes.
Don’t just stir your homemade stuffing. Put some gloves on and knead the ingredients together. That helps the bread retain moisture, and it is the secret to making the sticky stuffing that everyone loves.
6. Cannabis-Infused Green Bean Almondine
Green bean casserole is an American traditional side dish that people look forward to. It is also the perfect healthy complement to a classic roast turkey meal. Most of us would be pretty disappointed if we didn’t see the classic casserole on the table.
People have their own versions of green bean casserole, and some put some tasty fried onions on top to give it a delicious crunch. This recipe, however, adds an even healthier dose of raw almonds that are full of fiber, nutrients, and texture to take the bean casserole over the top.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
- 1/4 cup cannabis-infused olive oil
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Lemon zest for garnish
Instructions:
- Blanch green beans in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath.
- In a skillet, sauté garlic in cannabis-infused olive or canola oil until fragrant.
- Add green beans and sliced almonds, tossing until coated thoroughly.
- Season with salt and pepper, garnish with lemon zest and serve.
Just like other Thanksgiving recipes, your green bean casserole can be repurposed into a cold salad the next day. Try tossing it with some Italian salad dressing. Or just reheat it since it’s delicious.
7. Cannabis-Infused Apple Cider
There is apple cider for everyone else, and then cannabis-infused apple cider. The warmth and sweetness of the cider aren’t impacted by adding cannabis if you infuse your decarboxylated flower into honey. It’s a match made in heaven on a cold day.
Ingredients:
- 1 quart apple cider
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/4 cup cannabis-infused honey
- 1 orange, sliced
- Whole cloves
Instructions:
- In a pot, combine apple cider, cinnamon stick, cannabis-infused honey, orange slices, and a few cloves.
- Simmer over low heat for 20-30 minutes.
- Strain and serve warm.
Don’t throw out your leftover infused cider, either. It is equally delicious as a cold drink over ice and amazing with the turkey you will be eating for a few days.
How to Organize Foods to Prevent Accidental Ingestion
If you are making a Thanksgiving meal for yourself, or you and a partner, you can relax a little. Both of you know what is inside the food you are serving. But if you plan to have other guests join you, there has to be a strategy in place to make sure that the cannabis-infused foods are kept separate.
One way is to have colored containers for the foods that contain THC. For example, the rest of your feast may be served on regular platters placed on the table. But the “special” appetizer, gravy, and side dishes can be placed in colored containers.
Make sure to inform your guests which foods are off limits, and ensure that they are out of reach from minors. Feast responsibly, and if the couch is calling your name after eating all the delicious food, then have a nap. That’s healthy, too, even on a full tummy.
