As this happens, institutions are conducting more and more studies. For instance, one study conducted by Colorado University has highly anticipated results, as it features athletes under the influence of medical marijuana while participating in physical exercise—and athletes are one of the leading groups eagerly awaiting the outcome.
Support from athletes
Aside from that study, as we mentioned, elite athletes worldwide in every major sport have noted the use of medical marijuana. People like Ricky Williams and Kevin Durant are just two on that long list, and both have contributed to killing the stigma currently around medical marijuana.
But really, the question is, will the endorsement from athletes and the studies like the one by Colorado University support the use of medical marijuana long term? If they do, then what does this mean for cannabis’ general acceptance within the athletic community?
Does medical marijuana enhance performance?
That’s the question that many people are wondering. If so many athletes enjoy using it and support its use, it must enhance performance, no?
Well, not necessarily.
Regardless of its beneficial effects, the World Anti-Doping Agency has stood firm on the decision to ban its use. A prime example of that is the recent controversy over barring Sha’Carri Richardson from competing in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after receiving a positive result for the injection of marijuana.
To be clear, when making that decision, they seemingly ignored the research done by the US National Library of Medicine that clearly stated marijuana is not a performance-enhancing drug. The only “enhancement” inferred is the positive mental states, which is not nearly the same as the effects steroids give users.
In conclusion
It’s too early for anyone to say whether using medical marijuana is an excellent way to avoid burnout or anything of that sort. However, we can confidently say that it won’t boost your performance, but it will improve your experience—and many athletes around the world back that much.
