Are you new to cooking with MMJ? Well, we’d like to wish you a warm welcome. If you’re new to cooking with MMJ, you can get started here by following these steps to create a simple cannabis-infused butter that can be used in a variety of applications.
It’s time to get into the holiday spirit.
The only ingredients you will need for this recipe is:
- 1 cup of butter
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup, about 7-10 grams, of ground cannabis, decarboxylated.
Step 1: Decarboxylate (decarb) your cannabis
Decarboxylation is a simple, yet necessary step when it comes to cooking with cannabis, Decarboxylation converts the compounds in the plants into compounds that can be absorbed into your bloodstream by eating them. To get started, preheat your oven to 240℉ and place your whole cannabis flowers on a non-stick and oven-safe tray. Grab some parchment paper and cover your tray to prevent the flowers from sticking to it. Once your oven is done preheating, put the tray in the oven and set a timer for 30-40 minutes. If your cannabis is a little older and drier, less time may be required. Every 10 minutes gently mix the buds. To mix the buds give your tray a gentle shake to expose the surface area of the buds equally. The goal is to expose them to enough heat for long enough to complete the decarboxylation, but not so much as to burn the flowers or dry them into dust.
Step 2: Grind
Once you’re done with decarboxylating your cannabis, grind coarsely with a hand grinder to break it into smaller pieces and increase the surface area that will be in contact with the butter.
Step 3: Melt your butter & Mix in Cannabis
Grab your 1 cup of butter, 1 cup of water, and a stockpot or saucepan. Add the butter and water into the pot or pan. Set the stove on low heat and let the butter melt. Adding water will help regulate the temperature and prevent the butter from scorching. Once the butter is completely melted you can mix in the ground cannabis and allow it to steep.
Step 5: Let it simmer
Keep the pot or pan at low heat. If you have a thermometer, the ideal temperature should be above 160℉ but not going over 200℉. Let the mixture simmer for 2 to 3 hours, and stir the mixture occasionally. Don’t let the mixture come to a full boil.
Step 6: Strain cannabutter
Grab a funnel, jar, and cheesecloth. Remove from heat and allow the cannabis/butter to cool. Set the funnel on top of the jar and line it with the cheesecloth. Once the mixture has cooled down, pour it into the cheesecloth-lined funnel, allowing the mixture to strain freely into the jar. Don’t squeeze the cheesecloth as this may push small plant material through and into your finished butter. Plant materials can contribute to an unpleasant taste in the canna-butter so the less that comes through the better.
Step 7: Refrigerate
Once the mixture is fully strained, refrigerate the jar in order to solidify the butter. If you see excess water at the bottom of the jar, remove the sold butter out with a knife and pour the water out. Only do this, after your butter has solidified and completely separated from the water.
Step 8: Dose with caution
The butter is now ready to consume but it will be difficult to gauge how potent each serving of butter is going to be. Variables like the THC% of the starting material, the efficiency of the decarboxylation process, and the length of time the mixture is simmered for can all affect the potency of the final product. To test the potency of your butter, spread about ¼ or ½ teaspoon on a cracker or piece of bread and see how you feel an hour after consuming it. The idea here is to always start with less, and then increase to achieve your desired effects.
If you don’t want to use an oven there is a slow cooker option for you too.
