How Women Are Leading the Future of Medical Cannabis – And Changing Lives

by | Mar 30, 2025 | Medical Marijuana, MedWell

Every March, we recognize Women’s History Month – a time to honor women’s contributions and spotlight the ongoing fight for equality, visibility, and voice. It’s a moment for reflection, celebration, and action.

At MedWell Health, this month holds special meaning. We’re proud to be a women-led team working at the heart of one of the most transformative movements of our time: the medical cannabis industry. This March, we’re honoring the fearless women who are helping lead the way in the cannabis space, building businesses, shaping cannabis culture, and improving lives through compassionate care.

Why We Celebrate Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month began in 1981 and has since become a global celebration of women’s achievements – particularly those long overlooked. The 2024 theme, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion,” still rings true in 2025, especially in the cannabis industry, where women in cannabis continue to fight for equal opportunity, representation, and medical access.

In healthcare, wellness, and cannabis – spaces long dominated by men – women have had to push harder to be seen and heard. But they’ve shown up anyway, driven by purpose, resilience, and a desire to create more inclusive and compassionate systems.

“Women in business are often very aware of the negative impacts of gender roles in the workplace… You really get to be who you want to be in this industry, and I am extremely grateful for that.”
Ashliegh P., Director of Revenue

At MedWell, that mindset fuels everything we do, from how we treat our patients to how we support each other.

The Role of Women in the Medical Cannabis Movement

The medical cannabis space is one of the most dynamic areas in healthcare. Women entrepreneurs are helping define what the future of cannabis looks like. From co-founders and managing directors to educators and scientists, women in cannabis are making major strides in research, policy, and patient care.

They’re not just part of the cannabis movement – they’re leading it. They’re challenging stigma, pushing for cannabis legalization, and changing how society views medical marijuana as a tool for women’s health, well-being, and chronic care, including support for AIDS patients.

At MedWell, many of our team members entered this space because of their own healing journeys, and now they’re helping others find theirs.

“I was drawn to the medical cannabis industry because of its potential to improve patients’ quality of life… Helping to break stigmas and expand safe, effective treatment options motivates me every day.”
Jackie R., COO

This is the real work of trailblazing women in cannabis: not just participating but transforming the industry from the inside out.

Representation, Role Models, & Real Change

In any industry, especially one as fast-evolving as cannabis, representation matters. At MedWell, we believe that when women support women, everyone benefits. That includes Gen Z women and young professionals entering the space now as some of the fastest-growing consumers and advocates for full legalization.

“I’m truly blessed to be surrounded by dozens of women that are willing to fight for their rights, advocate for minority groups, and don’t take no for an answer.”
Ashliegh P., Director of Revenue

One standout example of advocacy in action is Cannabis Queens by Melanie Wentzel, a book highlighting female leaders. It’s a powerful tribute to the many women shifting cannabis culture.

In this month, we note the contributions of many icons beyond MedWell, like Mary Jane Rathbun (aka Brownie Mary) and modern pioneers like Wanda James, the first Black woman to own a cannabis business in Colorado.

Advice From Women Building the Future of Cannabis

If you’re thinking about stepping into the cannabis industry, whether as a patient, professional, or advocate, our team has some powerful wisdom to share:

“Take every opportunity to learn more about cannabis as medicine, and tune in to hearings in your state.”
Traci, Director of Medical Operations

“Build strong connections with other women to support each other and embrace change.”
Kathleen S., Special Projects Manager

These women are helping build businesses, shift narratives, and advocate for education, access, and activism nationwide.

Celebrating Women Today and Every Day

Women’s History Month is a time to honor the past, but more importantly, it’s a time to look ahead. From legacy makers like Brownie Mary to today’s co-founded startups and CBD product pioneers, cannabis is female – and that truth is visible across every level of this industry.

At MedWell, we’re proud to be part of that story. We see the impact of female leadership, community support, and forward-thinking care daily. And every day, we celebrate the women creating a healthier, more compassionate future for patients, small businesses, and the world.
