The Relationship Between Cannabis and the Gut

by | Mar 21, 2022 | Massachusetts

The gut microbiome is a complicated atmosphere that accounts for a large part of our body– roughly six pounds of bacteria, microbes, and viruses all living within. These three things combined create a toxic space that can incur a load of adverse health effects.

Fortunately for those suffering from those adverse effects, a study conducted by PubMed.Gov has linked healthy gut microbiota to cannabinoids, specifically, THC and CBD.

The study shows promising results that are worth a thorough review in the following paragraphs below. Please continue reading for more information.

The positive relationship between the THC + CBD and the gut:

Here is a quote from the study:

“THC + CBD treatment attenuated EAE and caused a significant decrease in inflammatory cytokines such as IL-17 and IFN-γ while promoting the induction of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 and TGF-β.”

In other terms, cannabis significantly decreased the number of cell types that cause inflammation– while promoting the installation of healthy cell types that are anti-inflammatory.

That means that those suffering from inflammatory conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis could experience long-lasting relief with the correct, continued use of medical cannabis.

The study continues to say that “THC + CBD-mediated changes in the microbiome play a critical role in attenuating EAE. – EAE being very similar to Multiple Sclerosis, making it an ideal condition to test on.

The gut microbiome and the endocannabinoid system:

The endocannabinoid system is key in supporting and maintaining a balanced body. So much so that it is instrumental in the regulation of mood, emotions, pain, and even appetite. However, an unbalanced microbiome can negatively affect it.

That can result in changes to your mood and anything else which falls under the endocannabinoid umbrella.

Luckily, the evidence linking a healthy gut biome and the use of cannabis is piling up, even on top of the long history of cannabis being used to treat abdominal pain, cramps, or even nausea and vomiting.

In conclusion…

With the evidence ever-growing, we as a society may not be able to afford to ignore the benefits of cannabis any longer. The pain in the gut of many individuals and the pain elsewhere on the body stands to be eased with the correct use of THC and CBD.
